Frequently Asked Questions

What Instruments Do You Teach?

Our instructors have a variety of specialties covering many instruments, genres, and styles.  If you're looking for a particular specialty and would like to be matched with an instructor, please email to let us know what you're looking for.

What Music Genres Do You Teach?

In short, we teach ALL genres and styles of music, but our most frequently taught are Rock, Classical, Pop, Jazz, and Singer/Songwriter.

We believe strongly in the value of classical music and classical education methods, however we also strongly believe it's important for students to always be working on music they like to listen to.  We find the middle path to create well rounded musicians who have the tools to learn and play anything.

What Areas Do You Specialize In?

In addition to instrumental skills, we teach a wide variety of musical subjects and skills, including music theory, ear training, audition prep, composition, improvisation, and sight-reading. We love teaching songwriting and producing. We also teach music technology including several kinds of music software, including Logic Pro, Garage Band, Finale, and Musescore.

How Long/Often Are Lessons?

Lesson length and frequency depend on the student's age, goals, and dedication. Most students 4-11 start with 30 minutes once a week, while middle school aged students and older may prefer to start with 45 or 60 minute lessons weekly. Students who have big goals may opt to do more than one lesson per week. As with our lesson content, lesson length and frequency are customized to your particular goals and needs.

How Much Are Lessons?

Our current rates are as follows:

$32/ 30 minute lessons

$47/ 45 minute lessons

$64/ 60 minute lessons

There is an additional travel charge of $11 per home visit for students living in our standard travel radius (Pasadena, Altadena, South Pasadena).  The travel fee for students living outside our normal travel radius will be determined based on location.

Lessons are purchased in packages of 4.

How Does Payment Work?

We use a scheduling and billing system called Fons.  Upon signing up for lessons, you'll receive an invitation to set a password for your Fons account.  Fons tracks your scheduling and billing, sends lesson reminds, and lets you know when it's time to purchase a new package of lessons.

Lessons are purchased in packages of 4.  Fons tracks your schedule, and when you've used up all your lesson credits, it sends a friendly reminder that you'll be charged for your new lesson package.

What If I Need To Cancel My Lesson?

Lessons can be canceled or rescheduled via fons or text up to 24 hours before the lesson.

In case of severe illness or family emergency, lessons may be rescheduled less than 24 hours in advance.

Late cancellations may be rescheduled if our schedule allows, however we cannot guarantee availability.  Late cancellations that cannot be rescheduled will be charged for the missed lesson.

No-shows will be charged for the lesson with no opportunity to reschedule.

How Often Should I Practice?

Practice expectations will depend on the age/goals of the student. We ask our young students to start out practicing 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week.  Older students typically practice 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.  Research shows that practicing a short time many days a week is MUCH more effective at learning and retaining skills than practicing a long time once or twice a week.
